The WM8993 Center manages all of the audio processing and audio routing within a multimedia handset, ensuring it supports most audio architectures and usage scenarios. The WM8993 integrates Wolfson's flexible ReTuneTM mobile parametric equalizer to optimize speaker characteristics and increase speaker frequency response. Simultaneously integrated programmable dynamic range control boosts low-level signals and optimizes dynamic range in challenging mobile environments. This helps maximize volume, increases ringtone audibility, and improves music playback on small, inexpensive speakers on your phone. Dynamic range control also helps prevent audio signal clipping and distortion, which can cause the battery to become overloaded, causing the possibility of prematurely shutting down and damaging the speaker due to battery degradation.
With a ground-referenced Class W headphone driver, the WM8993 provides improved bass response and a typical CODEC power consumption of less than 5mW, which is equivalent to charging up to 100 hours of playback time (when using the latest processors). The built-in charge pump of the WM8993 eliminates the need for expensive DC-blocking capacitors, which greatly saves bill of materials for PCB space and audio subsystems. Active ground loop noise suppression and DC bias correction help prevent power-down plosives and ground noise from degrading headphone output quality.
For added flexibility, the WM8993 high power speaker driver can operate in Class D or Class AB mode. In 1W stereo mode, the chip can drive an 8Ω bridge (BTL) speaker load with less than 1% total harmonic distortion; in 2W mono mode, two speaker drivers can be connected together for extra The power output drives a 4Ω load. The low leakage and high Power Supply rejection ratio (PSRR) of the full audio band can also be directly connected to the battery to power the speaker.
The WM8993's fully differential internal architecture and on-chip radio frequency (RF) noise filters ensure a high degree of noise immunity, while Wolfson's next-generation frequency-locked loop (FLL) helps reduce system power consumption and increase flexibility.
