US Department of Energy solicits $50 million for solid-state lighting investment projects for financial support

On June 29, US President Barack Obama and US Secretary of Energy Steven Chu announced an energy efficiency-focused investment project that would provide $50 million in funding for three solid-state lighting (SSL) projects.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) is currently looking for suitable applications to promote the development of solid-state lighting and the use of technology in the marketplace. This funding is mainly used for DOE's two existing SSL R&D projects, the sixth round of ongoing projects, namely Core Technology Research and Product Development. The third new project will focus on accelerating the development of the SSL manufacturing industry, which will not only reduce costs, but also improve the performance of SSL products.

The SSL projects being sought by the US Department of Energy mainly include the following categories:

• Core technology research projects – focusing on the technical development of applied research, with particular emphasis on achieving efficiency, performance and cost targets. Selected projects will be able to fill technical gaps or provide favorable information or data.

• Product Development Projects—focus on developing or improving commercially viable materials, equipment, or systems using information obtained from basic or applied research. The selected project will be used to develop targeted market applications with fully defined pricing, power efficiency and other performance parameters that are necessary to successfully develop the recommended product.

• Manufacturing projects – primarily through improved production equipment, processes or monitoring technologies to achieve significant cost reductions. The selected project will face technical challenges, and this must be overcome when the price drops to a certain level, that is, when SSL can compete with existing lighting on the original cost basis.
