Recently, Merdens Mercedes-Benz design director Gorden Wagener accepted an exclusive interview with foreign media, saying that Mercedes-Benz's new car development has been planned for 2020, while platform development is ahead of 2035. The complexity and digitization of design has increased over the past decade.
At present, the design of the new car mainly needs to meet the user needs of appearance, performance, comfort, etc., but soon high technology will penetrate into the automotive industry, and automatic driving is one of them. At last year's CES, Mercedes-Benz released the F015 concept car, which allowed us to see the internal changes of the car in advance.
However, the concept car is still too advanced, and the Wagner and Mercedes 700 team of designers are exploring how to design an autonomous self-driving car in the next few years. In Wagner's vision, cars equipped with autonomous driving technology will not completely remove the steering wheel, and users can continue to enjoy driving. Mercedes-Benz founder Carl Benz registered the first patent on a car 130 years ago, and Wagner believes that humans can continue to control the car for 130 years.

How do you allocate time for autonomous driving and general vehicle design?
Although we also recognize the importance of sharing the economy, I think it takes time for people to change their ideas, and this process of transformation is not simple. In addition, there are many definitions of autonomous vehicles. One is Google's approach, which is low-speed, easy to control, and developed for specific environments. However, we want to hand over the choices to the users, and they can switch to the manual driving mode when they want to enjoy driving.
Do all cars have automatic driving ability?
This is indeed a big trend, and our E-Class sedan has completed the highway autopilot test.
So UI designers must be familiar with how users use their autopilots?
This is the cool thing about autonomous driving, we can make the most of the UI. However, at Mercedes, we want to ensure that all designs are 100% safe. Unlike Silicon Valley, Mercedes-Benz does not install new technology on vehicles to allow users to experiment.
Do you think it is a bit early to talk about autonomous driving now?
In my opinion, there is indeed some speculation about hype, just like an electric car. Everything is a gradual development and cannot be accomplished overnight.
