Overview:
As the complexity and reliability of communication channels continue to increase, so does the demand and expectations of telecommunications systems. These communication systems are highly dependent on high performance, high clock frequency and data converter devices, and the performance of these devices is highly dependent on the quality of the system power rail. When using a noisy power supply, the clock or converter IC cannot achieve maximum performance. Just a small amount of power supply noise can have a significant negative impact on performance. This article will carefully study a basic LDO topology, find out its main noise source, and give some methods to minimize its output noise.
One of the key parameters that indicate power quality is its noise output. Its common reference is RMS noise measurement or spectral noise density. To achieve the lowest RMS noise or optimal spectral noise characteristics, linear voltage regulators (eg, low-dropout voltage regulators, LDOs) are always superior to switching regulators. This makes it a choice for noise sensitive applications.
Basic LDO Topology A simple linear voltage regulator consists of a basic control loop whose negative feedback is compared to an internal reference to provide a constant voltage—regardless of changes in input voltage, temperature, or load current or disturbance.
Figure 1 shows the basic block diagram of an LDO regulator. The red arrow indicates the negative feedback signal path. The output voltage VOUT is divided by feedback resistors R1 and R2 to provide a feedback voltage VFB. VFB is compared with the reference voltage VREF at the negative input of the error amplifier to provide a gate drive voltage of VGATE. Finally, the error signal drives the output transistor NFET to regulate VOUT.
