The CAT3661 uses a patented architecture that integrates fault protection and fault diagnosis to drive a single LED backlight at up to 5 mA. Soft start current limiting and short circuit protection make this new component ideal for use in coin cell powered devices. Typical applications include low power liquid crystal display (LCD) backlights and a wide range of portable handheld backlights including medical devices.
The CAT3661 is available in a TQFN-16 package of only 3 mm x 3 mm x 0.8 mm (height), providing a useful solution for engineers looking for new designs with limited board space. This new component provides low noise input chopping and constant switching frequency, enabling the use of small external ceramic capacitors, further saving space and total system cost. The four-mode charge pump supports a wide range of input voltages from 2.0 V to 5.5 V. It also provides the CAT3661 with peak performance levels of up to 92%, up to 10% higher than traditional high-performance 1.5x three-mode charge pumps. At full load, this component has a typical quiescent current of only 150 μA in all operating modes, with zero current shutdown, which promotes reduced power consumption and ensures long battery life of the application.
