CES2017, Intel held a virtual reality conference

The scene shown in this photo seems to be uncommon today. Almost at any technology-related event, you can see similar scenes, but think about it, in many people's virtual reality. After a few years of (VR) industry outbreak, we still need to wear heavy and uncomfortable head-mounted equipment to experience the resolution is not very high, from time to time will feel dizzy, the neck is aching virtual reality for a long time, still I feel a little sorry.

CES2017, Intel held a virtual reality conference

Intel’s special launch conference on virtual reality on the 4th

This is an instant on the 4th Intel conference at the Consumer Electronics Show 2017. Perhaps this virtual reality experience will be clumsy and funny in the eyes of future humans. But this is the realistic scenario of VR virtual reality experience under the current technical conditions.

Intel used this ingenious way to bring a virtual reality conference to the media. The purpose is to let everyone experience a different "future life". Intel is not difficult to understand for the good intention of this conference. The site is neatly filled with nearly 300 comfortable leather sofas. There is a small table in front of each sofa. There is a high-performance laptop on the small table (brands are Asus, Acer, Dell, etc.) and connected. The computer's Oculus virtual reality head-mounted device and detector for positioning. From a distance, all these things, plus the ubiquitous cable, make the scene a bit messy.

Intel hopes to bring a comfortable experience to everyone present, but unfortunately, even sitting on a soft leather sofa, the current technical conditions can provide a VR experience that is still far from comfortable and pleasant. .

Therefore, in addition to the leather sofa and a large number of equipment, there are also items such as vomit bags that are generally only seen in the seats of the aircraft. In case of the occasional need of the scene, Intel also arranged any on-site conferences. More technical support personnel are needed to help solve problems encountered during the demonstration.

As a member of the conference, although I did not experience the worst situation of using a vomit bag (almost a rough observation, almost no one actually used it), but unfortunately, the VR in my first seat. The equipment was unable to be used due to technical failure, and missed the first simulated skydiving experience. After the debugging failed, it had to change to another seat.

The process of the entire 45-minute conference is described as follows: Intel CEO Ke Zaiqi speaks on the stage, then the participants in the field wear a VR device experience, then take off the VR glasses, listen to a speech, and then Experience a period, this continuous picking, wearing the process of picking, also affects the overall experience.

Korge tries to explain from the three aspects of “travel”, “work” and “entertainment” why VR devices can give people a better experience and why this is part of the future technology life.

In these three aspects, Intel also emphasized the real-time nature of VR images, whether it is the rural scenery of Vietnam in the “Travel” section, or the power grid detection in the “Working” section, or the ongoing demonstration of the “Entertainment” part. The American College Basketball League in China emphasizes that “this is in progress” at this moment, which is a step further than the pre-recorded VR images that have been experienced in the past.

Of course, Intel also made a demonstration at the press conference that made people less disappointed with VR. That is Intel’s "Merged Reality" from last year's developer conference. In this demonstration, Intel The two staff members, in a room simulating a normal family living room, each brought wireless virtual reality glasses equipment to collaborate on the game. During the whole process, two presenters could see each other and the table in reality. Furniture such as chairs can become items in the virtual world, such as trenches and arsenals that fight aliens. Through the "immersion reality" technology, the real world and the virtual world can be combined to create more usage scenarios.

At the press conference that day, Intel announced that the "Immersive Reality" technology, codenamed Project Alloy, will be officially shipped in the fourth quarter of 2017.

Although industry giants such as Intel, Microsoft, Google (microblogging), Samsung, and Facebook are all promoting VR development, the reality is that the industry is still tepid, and Oculus was acquired by Facebook for $2 billion. Even this year, I have not come to participate in the Consumer Electronics Show. This is not only the limitation of hardware technology, but also the lack of virtual reality content. These make the virtual reality industry not look as good as it originally looked.

Fortunately, this veteran chip maker has not put all the "treasure" on virtual reality. Intel recently announced the acquisition of a 15% stake in map service provider HERE, jointly announced with BMW and Mobileye this year. The start of the driverless drive test and the first global 5G modem, these moves indicate that Intel's strategy to build a driverless platform is steadily advancing.
