Easy to build intelligent hardware environment Broadcom pushes $20 IoT chipset

Chip maker Broadcom today introduced a $20 IoT chip development kit that combines thermometers, accelerators, gyroscopes, compasses, humidity and pressure sensors to enable developers to build IoT prototypes. Broadcom said the kit makes it easy for hardware designers to build hardware for the Internet of Things that can sense the environment and convey feedback to mobile phones, home communication hubs, or other nearby devices.

Broadcom hopes the kit will sell more chips for smart baby monitors, smart door locks, motion monitors, and other similar devices.

Broadcom's development kit is called Wiced, has a built-in microcontroller, and uses Bluetooth or Wi-Fi wireless communication components. Broadcom said that the Wicded suite can be the first version of the developer's final product. Once the developer downloads the free software and communicates with the device, the developer can establish a wireless link for technical evaluation within one minute.

In addition, developers can follow Broadcom's design to remove all unwanted sensors to reduce costs and repackage them with a suitable new plastic enclosure without having to worry about interfering with the remaining components.
