Enter the world of HUD 2.0
The traditional HUD provides a field of view (FOV) of approximately 5 degrees, covering a portion of a single lane. The HUD 2.0 allows the driver to see traffic outside a single lane with a larger FOV of up to 12 degrees and a longer virtual image distance (VID). At the same time, upgrading from a small auxiliary display to a large primary display also means increasing the importance of graphics quality and the importance of constant readability under varying lighting conditions. In addition, the increase and increase in FOV and VID puts higher demands on brightness and efficacy.

The wider FOV and high brightness provide the driver with an easy to view image. To ensure readability under varying lighting conditions, the HUD should be able to produce a virtual image between 15,000 and 30,000 cd/m2 to provide the right contrast for a range of different road conditions and lighting conditions. In order to achieve greater FOV and high brightness while minimizing energy consumption, we need an efficient imager. The DLP 0.3-inch WVGA Type A100 Digital Micromirror Device (DMD) is more than 66% efficient and uses direct-emitting RGB LEDs for imaging with rich color saturation.
As the FOV of HUD systems continues to expand, more and more solar energy is collected in HUD optics. In addition, the increased VID allows the driver to view the image from a suitable angle, and as such, the energy from the sunlight is increasingly focused on the HUD's internal imager. The combination of these two points can cause excessive heat accumulated in a small area, thereby causing damage to the imager. The DLP-based HUD system uses diffuse screen material to generate an internal image of the HUD system. There are two main advantages to doing this:
(1) It does not absorb solar energy - it diffuses light
(2) It does not heat itself.
These attributes help the system bring a larger FOV and a longer VID to smoothly upgrade to an augmented reality HUD system.
HUD is becoming an important part of the vehicle's Human Machine Interface (HMI) strategy, especially as technology becomes more deeply integrated into the driving experience. As HUDs transition from small auxiliary displays to large main displays, users' demands for image quality, readability and reliability are also increasing. The challenge for HUD designers is how to meet these new requirements while facing the problems of traditional vehicle environmental conditions. DLP technology has established a reputation for reliability and flexibility. Next, DLP technology will be a powerful component for the development of next-generation HUD systems.
