Sony, Toshiba and Hitachi have announced that Japan Display, a joint venture between the three companies and Japan Industrial Innovation Corporation (INCJ), has officially started operations on April 1.
It is reported that Sony, Toshiba and Hitachi first announced the establishment of Japan Display last year. Under the agreement, Sony, Toshiba and Hitachi merged the three small and medium-sized LCD LCD touch panel businesses of the three companies into one new company, each holding 10% of the joint venture, and the remaining 70% of the shares were held by INCJ, which invested US$2.6 billion.
Japan Display will focus on multiple markets such as mobile and automotive, and will set up a research and development department to increase its market position. Shuichi Otsuk, chairman of the company's board of directors, said that Japan Display will become the leading Japanese company in the global industry and form a leading organizational structure for rapid response.
On April 2, Samsung also just announced the spin-off of the LCD business, the establishment of Samsung Display (Samsung Display). With a revenue of approximately $20 billion, the newly formed company is the world's largest display manufacturer, focusing on the development and sales of display panel technology and panel products.
