According to Planetanalog analyst Bill Schweber, the next six to 12 months of simulation technology will be more active:

Power over Ethernet (PoE)

With the upcoming approval of the enhanced, high-power PoE specification, IEEE802.3at, a large number of vendors will enter the PoE market to provide controllers, protection circuits, power supplies, and related functions.

LED driver

We see that a large number of LEDs are being used in LED lighting for area lighting, LED arrays, LCD screens, and various LED applications. These drivers include multiple power levels, voltage (regulatory) values, protection and fault circuits. Various LED applications have different topologies and therefore have different requirements in output architecture and drive levels. Single high-power LEDs are very different from serial/parallel arrays in backlight applications.

USB, especially USB3.0

With the formal specification of this faster and more capable version of the USB interface, I expect physical level interface ICs, test fixtures, protection components, and related components to emerge. Note that USB 3.0 is not just USB 2.0 with faster clocks and more powerful drivers, it also has new protocols and formats.

RF power amplifier

With the stimulation of new standards and frequencies for cell phones and various wireless handheld devices (LTE, 3G, 4G and WiMAX), performance and power consumption have become key factors. This means that power amplifiers (PAs) must be efficient, reliable, and capable of handling multiple frequency bands and antenna loads. Both veteran and relatively new vendors are aggressively moving into this area because PA devices do not require a large number of active components, but require specialized semiconductor processes, modeling tools, and physical layouts.

Wired connection high speed signal transmission

Linear drives, receivers, and equalizers for fast wired connections, such as digital video at the studio, wired connections for connecting all these ICs, PCBs, and even chassis. These high-speed signals may be "digital" in theory, but they exist in the Gbps analog world, so there are problems with distortion, group delay, phase shift, roll-off, attenuation, and noise, as well as all other problems that exist in the real world. Keeping the signal clean, pure, and error-free, while transmitting these signals over coaxial cable or CAT5 or twisted pair, requires specialized analog circuitry and management.
