China Mobile and its partners Qualcomm and ZTE announced plans to conduct large-scale 5G testing based on 3GPP standards.
Before a new generation of mobile technologies is fully rolled out, interoperability testing and field performance testing are required. Now, China Mobile hopes to begin testing soon before the 5G standard is finalized.
Qualcomm stated in the press release: "These tests will be run in the 3.5 GHz sub-spectrum 6 GHz IF band. The test aims to promote the rapid validation and commercialization of the 5G air interface (NR) technology in the mobile ecosystem to achieve 3GPP-based Rel-15 standard 5G air interface infrastructure and equipment.†(Note: The air interface refers to the connection protocol between the mobile terminal and the base station. The air interface includes a series of technical standards such as coding, modulation, frame structure, filtering, etc.)
China Mobile and its hardware partners hope to achieve data transfer rates of several gigabytes per second, and achieve lower latency and more reliable transmission than today's networks, thus demonstrating the possibility of 5G technology. With the rise of IoT devices, autonomous vehicles, and drones, as well as the surge in demand for mobile bandwidth from virtual reality and internet cloud computing, 5G will become one of the most important technical guarantees.

Qualcomm will provide equipment prototypes for trials, while ZTE will provide base stations for simulations in real-world scenarios. The trial will focus on the 3.5 GHz sub-spectrum 6 GHz mid-band and use higher-level support such as large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna technology, adaptive self-contained TDD, beamforming, and OFDM-based scalable waveforms. Bandwidth, advanced coding, modulation schemes, and a new, flexible, low-latency, slot-based architecture.

These trials are expected to begin in the second half of 2017 and will help test and develop the first 3GPP 5G air interface specification and ensure global compatibility with future devices.
