US Wireless Communications and CTIA Urge FCC to Act on Spectrum Allocation in the 3.5 GHz and 3.7-4.2 GHz Bands

The US Wireless Communications and Internet Association (CTIA) is urging the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to act on the spectrum allocations for the 3.5 GHz and 3.7-4.2 GHz bands in July this year.

According to foreign media reports, the US Wireless Communications and Internet Association (CTIA) is urging the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to act on the spectrum allocation in the 3.5 GHz and 3.7-4.2 GHz bands in July this year to ensure the United States in the global 5G competition. Take the lead.

CTIA has been striving for more spectrum for the mobile industry, but with the continued acceleration of the rest of the world, especially in the 3.5 GHz band, its views have shown a new sense of urgency. In the United States, the FCC has a unique sharing model for the 3.5 GHz band, also known as the CBRS band. The licensed spectrum portion of the 3.5 GHz band has been a topic of controversy in the United States.

In a letter to the FCC on May 30th, CTIA President and CEO Meredith Attwell Baker explained why the FCC needs to step up its efforts to bring 3.5GHz to market. She cited a study from Analysys Mason that the US ranked sixth in the mid-band spectrum availability, and the rest of the world is accelerating 5G deployment by simplifying the allocation process for the mid-band spectrum.

She pointed out that South Korea has announced that it will auction the 3.5GHz spectrum in June this year, while Japan promised to release the spectrum of the 3.6-4.2 GHz band by March 2019. China has allocated the 3.5 GHz band spectrum to its three major telecom operators, and these operators have already conducted 5G device deployment testing in multiple cities.

"It's worth noting that the standards for 5G terminals and base stations in the 3.5GHz band are currently being finalized, and this year the world is moving in the direction of deployment," Meredith Attwell Baker wrote. “That’s why the Commission must act quickly to provide additional IF spectrum for wireless services and set a clear timetable for future spectrum auctions.”

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai said he is preparing to add the 3.7-4.2 GHz band to the FCC's July agenda, so this is being pushed.
