ESD Device Overview

The role of the ESD protection element is to transfer the ESD stress from the sensing element, allowing the current to flow through the protection element instead of the sensing element while maintaining the low voltage on the sensing element; the ESD protection element should also have low leakage and low capacitance without decreasing Circuit function; Will not cause damage to the high-speed signal, the function of the protection element will not drop under the action of multiple stress.

Transient voltage suppressors ( TVS), chip varistors MLV and polymer suppressors are several specialized ESD protection elements.

What should you watch out for when using TVS diodes for ESD protection?

The basic requirements for TVS diodes are related to the specific application, but in general the following requirements apply:

1) It can work normally under expected ESD stress;

2) High impedance (low leakage) in the normal voltage range;

3) Low impedance outside the normal voltage range;

4) The turn-on voltage is suitable for application;

5) Quickly switch from high to low impedance during stress

6) The capacitance is not too high for the target application.
