Developer Cindori launched an app called VR Desktop for Mac. Users can use the VR helmet Oculus Rift to log in to the Mac OS system in VR. According to reports, the main goal of this project is to provide users with a virtual multi-screen work environment. Users can even watch videos on Mac computers through this software and enjoy theater-like enjoyment at home.
This APP application can run MacOS 10.11 or higher devices and supports the Oculus Rift development kit V2.A. The Rift for the consumer version is expected to be officially launched in the second half of 2017. Through this app, Mac users can display their MacOS desktop through three virtual displays after wearing Rift’s head display. The app supports “modern†Mac devices that include a single chip, priced at approximately RMB 137.
This is actually a good news for Mac users because Oculus Rift does not have official support for Mac devices, and Mac computers do not have the graphics driver components needed to run Rift. For example, the 21.5-inch iMac relies on Intel's integrated graphics, while the 27-inch model uses the AMD Radeon R9 M300 series graphics card, which does not meet the VR-Ready standard. The latest MacBook relies on integrated graphics, while the expensive cylindrical Mac Pro professional-grade desktop PC is equipped with dual AMD FirePro D-series graphics chips and does not meet Rift's requirements.
Cindori is also addressing the current limitations, and the company said that they have developed a customized "most advanced VR framework" to provide a smooth VR experience for the latest Mac devices, excluding all relying solely on integrated Intel graphics The graphics card model. Cindori did not publish the actual hardware requirements for running applications. The minimum and recommended specifications required to support Oculus Rift are as follows:
Palmulus Rach, the founder of Oculus VR, said in March last year that when Apple released "a good computer," Oculus would reconsider the plan to support MacOS, and indeed, Oculus VR plans to support MacOS and Linux temporarily. Shelved for a long time, he further added: "Even if Apple releases a $6,000 Mac Pro and ships with the AMD FirePro D700 series, this device is still not in compliance with Rift's requirements. The crux of the problem is Apple. No priority is given to high-end GPUs. If they prioritize high-end GPUs as they have in the past, we would be happy to support the Mac, but now there is no one (Apple device) that can support Rift.â€
With this new app, VR can finally be run on a modern Mac device with a unique display, allowing users to play games, watch movies, and create spreadsheets in a VR environment. In addition to MacOS, Cindori plans to follow suit. Work on developing HTC Vive VR support.
