For the first time, the Beijing International Film Festival set up the VR screening unit to display all the works from abroad.

The 8th Beijing International Film Festival officially opened in recent days. Unlike previous years, this year's Beijing International Film Festival set up the VR screening unit for the first time, bringing together some outstanding foreign VR film and television works. The VR screening unit of the Beijing International Film Festival has set up three parts: VR film, vertical VR and device VR. A total of 8 works have been displayed, all of which are between 7-17 minutes.

It is understood that these works are from the United Kingdom, the United States, the United States / Taiwan, the United States / Iraq. VR movies include Wonderful You VR, The Sun Ladies VR, Dinner Party, and Magritte. The vertical interactive VR includes "Greenland MelTIng", "After Solitary" and "Dear Angelica". The VR device is the "Best Room" (Chalkroom), which won the "Best VR Experience Award" at the Venice Film Festival last year.

Let's take a look at each of the four VR movies:

The first, "Wonderful You VR", directed by John Durrant, is about 17 minutes long and is considered to be a long VR movie. This is a VR film that tells about the developmental processes of vision, smell, hearing, taste and touch. It is a new medium that allows everyone to return to their experiences, but no memory. In the uterus world.

The film was full of Oscar performance nominees Samantha Morton, but unfortunately there is no Chinese subtitles, and some readers may be a bit uncomfortable during the viewing process. However, when watching, it will be completely attracted by the plot. After the end of the movie, there is still a sense of insufficiency. The great process of life is born with the new medium of VR, which is quite powerful.

The second is about The Sun Ladies VR against the ISIS atrocities. The directors are Celine Tricart and ChrisTIan Stephen, which lasts about 7 minutes. The story is probably like this. ISIS soldiers invaded the Yazdi parish and targeted “ethnic purification” to kill all men and treat women and girls as sex slaves. The heroine was a well-known singer. After seeing the brutality of ISIS, she stepped off the stage, put on her outfit, assembled a group of brave women who escaped, and set up a female combat organization called The Sun Ladies. Their common goal is to save the sisters and defend the people's honor and dignity.

Unlike the first work, which is entirely made up of CG, this is a VR documentary that combines real-life shots with CG animations. The audience can be on the battlefield, face-to-face with the Yazdi female soldiers, listen to their stories and feel their unyielding struggle. Through a few simple shots, such as wiping guns in the dormitory, daily training, and the heroine's strong will, let the audience deeply feel the unyielding fighting spirit of the Sun female soldiers.

The third work is this year's new work, called "Dinner Party", directed by Angel Manuel Soto, about 13 minutes. This is a real-life stereoscopic VR suspense film. The story comes from the encounter of alien kidnappings reported by the American Hill couple in the 1960s. When the Hill couple couldn't recall it anymore and could no longer explain the incident, they sought hypnotherapy. At a dinner party, they gave hypnosis recordings to friends, hypnotic proverbs and scene dialogues alternated, revealing a completely different experience for couples.

In addition to real shots, the film is full of stylized, immersive and rich visual effects. The heroine and the actor have reacted completely differently after encountering alien abductions. Whether it is surprise or fear, only through the medium of VR can they be fully expressed. After reading, even want to experience it personally. The urge to be kidnapped by aliens. In addition, the film is also equipped with Chinese subtitles, which is also convenient for the audience to understand the story.

The fourth work, Magritte, was completed last year and was directed by John Durrant for about 7 minutes. According to the introduction of the work, Rene Magritte is a surrealist artist named after Dali and Miro. In the 3D virtual space constructed by this animation, the important symbols in Magritte's works are selected to give the audience an audio-visual journey through the sequence of Magritte's works.

In this work, from multiple scenes to stereo illusions, VR is used to achieve an ingenious combination with the theme of the artist's work. Visitors can immerse themselves in a series of landscapes, flying over beaches, forests, mountains and skies to explore and feel the source of love and inspiration in Margaret's art. But for those who are less exposed to surrealist art, it may be a bit confusing.

Next is the vertical interactive VR, which differs from the previous four VR movies in that it uses the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive with positioning system, but there is not much place to interact, it is still based on viewing. Three vertical interactive VR experiences were offered at the site, namely Greenland MelTIng, After Solitary and Dear Angelica.

"Dear Angelica" is directed by Saschka Unseld for about 13 minutes. This is a VR film production by Oculus Studio, which was nominated for Emmy last year. To complete this work, Oculus developed his own drawing application Quill.

The work was created entirely in the VR space, exploring the memory with a new immersive narrative grammar, creating a gorgeous visual experience and a journey into the mind. The daughter wrote a letter to her mother while she was in the room, recalling the story told by her mother, the movie scene that the mother had taken, and the mother’s struggle with the disease. Fantastic brushes and lines surround people, characters, and colors. The line of sight is free to rotate between the scenes, creating a moving story.

The director of Greenland MelTIng is Catherine Upin and Nonny de la Peña, which lasts about 13 minutes. It reflects the problems caused by the accelerated melting of Greenland glaciers due to global warming.

In September 2016, NASA scientists traveled to Greenland to gain insight into the causes of the rapid melting of ice. Using static photogrammetry, dynamic camera measurements, CGI and 360-degree shooting, the audience can experience all aspects of Greenland from a variety of unconventional perspectives: observing the retreating glaciers and experiencing the amazing low-altitude flight landscapes. Observe the glacier on the surface of the water and learn about the latest research findings of NASA.

After the "After Solitary" directors are Cassandra Herrman and Lauren Mucciolo, the time is about 10 minutes, the audience can physically and emotionally enter a single prison that is often difficult to understand.

The film uses techniques such as 3D scanning to place viewers in a single-person prison with realistic 3D scanning. The camera captures the stereo image of the prisoner and shares a room with the audience, telling the tragic story of solitary confinement and the lasting impact on himself. It is understood that the work has won the jury of the 2017 Southwestern South-South Film Festival (SXSW) jury and the highest award of the World VR Forum.

As for the VR device "Chalkroom" of this VR screening unit, due to time constraints, it has not been able to experience it. The "Chalkroom" directed by Laurie Anderson and Huang Xinjian lasted about 15 minutes and won the "Best VR Experience Award" in the VR Competition of the Venice Film Festival last year.

In the VR device, the huge blackboard is a symbol that symbolizes human memory. In the continuous erasing of the overwriting, the old memory remains, and the scattered dust is like a memory fragment. Numerous giant blackboards construct a vast virtual space, like a huge memory maze; the audience guides into the dreamlike world with the voice of Laurie Anderson, flying freely in virtual reality. The abstract symbol is transformed into a concrete, interactive entity that allows the audience to explore and connect the text to the memory.

In addition to the vertical interactive VR and VR devices using the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift heads, the headlights used in the four VR movies are the K2+ VR all-in-one from IDEALENS. The head is easy to wear and comfortable, and has high compatibility with the glasses, and can be easily worn even if the frame is wide.

In contrast, in the past, the common VR film and television experience, especially in foreign countries, mostly used Samsung Gear VR head display, with Samsung's mobile phone. However, compared with the VR all-in-one machine, it is obvious that the latter is more suitable. After all, there is no need to worry about the impact on the performance after the temperature rise of the mobile phone, and there is no various notification information to disturb the viewing. Together with the broadcast control system that can be controlled centrally by mobile phone or computer, more than ten viewers on the scene can watch the same content at the same time. Compared with mobile VR glasses, VR is more suitable for B-side applications such as film and television and education.

Although the works of this exhibition are all from abroad, domestic VR film and video creators also have a large number of excellent works, such as "The Dream of the Old Man", "Self-Travel", "Window" and "The Year of the VR Competition Unit of the Venice Film Festival last year." Home in Lanruo Temple. The change that VR can bring is not only the viewing angle of the audience, but also a new challenge for film and television creators. It is expected that more excellent VR film and television works will emerge in China.
