LLC Announces New Series of Current Sensor ICs ACS772/73

Allegro MicroSystems, LLC announces the introduction of the new current sensor family IC ACS772/73, which provides a cost-effective solution for AC or DC current sensing. With a 200 kHz bandwidth, the new product is ideal for applications such as motor control, load detection and management, power and DC-DC converter control, and inverter control. With a response time of 2.5μs, the ACS772/73 enables overcurrent fault detection in safety-critical applications. These sensors are used in automotive and industrial applications with an accuracy of ±2.1% over their entire life cycle. The two current sensor ICs are powered by a single 5V (ACS772) and 3.3V (ACS773) power supply.

The ACS772/73 device includes a precision, low-bias linear Hall circuit with a copper conductive path near the chip. The current flowing through the copper conductive path produces a magnetic field that the Hall IC converts into a proportional voltage. The accuracy of the device is optimized by keeping the magnetic signal as close as possible to the Hall sensor. The low-biased chopper-stabilized BiCMOS Hall IC is factory-precisely programmed to provide an accurate, proportional output voltage. Proprietary digital temperature compensation technology greatly improves the accuracy and temperature stability of the sensor IC.

Allegro's proprietary integrated shielding technology delivers low output voltage ripple and low offset drift in high-side and high-voltage applications, providing high-order immunity to current conductor dV/dt and stray electric fields. As the increased current flows through the primary copper conductive path for current sampling (from terminal 4 to terminal 5), the output of the device increases. The internal resistance of this conductive path is typically 100μΩ with low power dissipation. The large thickness of the copper conductor allows the device to withstand high overcurrent conditions. The electrical isolation between the terminals of the conductive path and the signal leads (pins 1 through 3) allows the ACS772/73 series of sensor ICs to be used in applications requiring electrical isolation without the use of optical isolators or other expensive isolation techniques.

The ACS772 and ACS773 current sensor ICs are available in Allegro's custom CB package, which takes up less space than competing current sensor module solutions. These devices also feature 2.5μS response time and are the fastest response time in Allegro's custom CB package. All devices are fully calibrated at the factory and are all lead-free. All leads are plated with 100% matte tin and the heavier standard size leadframe is made of oxygen free copper.
