Sample installation

Abrasion test materials vary in size and shape and are tested with a Taber® linear abrader. It is up to the user to determine a suitable sample holder to ensure that the sample is held in place. If the product changes or moves during the test, the inconsistent wear path may increase, which will damage your test results.

It is recommended that the specimen be tested as close as possible to the spline shaft. This reduces the force arm of the spline shaft, which in turn minimizes the tendency of the spline shaft to deflect when the test attachment is pulled over the sample. In order to reproduce the test results, it is important that the sample is not interfered by the motion of the test attachment and that the test is positioned in the same manner for each test and installation method.

Taber offers two sample mounting options for linear abraders.

Linear wear meter T-slot universal table

T-slot universal table

The T-slot universal table provides a large test surface area and can accommodate up to 5/16" and 3/8" T-slot configuration clips. The T-slot universal table has two T-slot configuration clips that will ensure the flattest sample and other shapes. There are also spacer strips that can be used to raise the surface by about 2 inches. It is recommended to minimize the deflection of the spline shaft when testing flat samples.

An optional sample holder can be used with the T-slot universal table. Secure the flat, semi-flexible or flexible sample with the wide slot sample holder kit.

Lightweight flexible materials such as textiles can be secured to the T-slot universal table using an optional sample mounting plate. An 8 mm diameter rod was placed under the sample to provide pre-tension and reduce movement in the test sample. The sample holder plate includes an 11 mm x 140 mm opening.

When using a magnetic stripe wear kit and a credit card sample holder test data card, a T-slot universal table is recommended. This test stand is provided with a recessed area for securely holding the data card in place. The semi-circular finger holes make it easy to remove the data card after the test is completed.

Wire clamps ensure wire or cable sample locations are maintained during testing. For use, the cylindrical object is designed to be at least 3.5 inches long and has a diameter between 0.037 and 0.098 inches. The support portion includes a raised region having a 0.080 radius cut to place the sample onto the stent. Attached to the T-slot universal table with two T-slot fasteners.

Linear wear meter universal sample stage

Universal sample stage

The universal sample stage is a versatile sample holder for the Taber Linear Abrasion Tester, which includes three interchangeable chucks. The standard vise head includes a nylon jaw that provides a "gentle grip" that opens approximately 57 mm. The wide open vise head jaws are designed to open approximately 150 mm ribs. The neoprene pad jaws have a good grip and, when reversed, form a "V" grip to hold the cylindrical object. The third interchangeable head is a clamp head having a surface having a planar diameter surface of 135.

The universal sample stage features a low profile mounting that includes a "split ball" design. This allows the sample positioning vise head to tilt, rotate or rotate. The universal sample stage is mounted to the bottom of the linear grindstone to ensure it does not move during the test.
