As the demand for super-sized TVs grows, the demand for higher resolution will also increase. According to the IHS Markit study, we will see the first applications of 8K monitors in the consumer market in 2018.
Although many people think that 8K TV is just a stone throw, it is actually an initiative to create an industry. NHK is leading the way in 8K R&D and has announced that it will launch the world’s first 4K/8K broadcast on December 1, 2018. NHK will broadcast 18 hours of 4K content and 12 hours of 8K content each day.
IHS believes that in 2017, ultra-high-definition panels are expected to occupy more than 98% of the 60-inch and above display market, but by 2024 the proportion will drop to 81%.
In 2018, most TV panel suppliers plan to mass-produce 8K displays. It is predicted that about 1% of the 60-inch and above display market this year will be an 8K (7680*4320 pixel resolution) screen, and this proportion will increase to 9% by 2020 and 19% by 2024.

Ricky Park, director of IHS Markit, said: "With ultra high-definition rapidly replacing Full HD in the oversized TV market, panel makers are looking forward to providing higher resolution differentiated products and hope to increase profitability through high-end products. 2018 will become 8K resolution TV screen first year."
Innolux began to develop 8K panels in 2017 and produced the first 8K LCD TV screen (60Hz, 65 inches) in the fourth quarter. This screen will be initially supplied to Sharp TV and some Chinese brands. At the same time, in the fourth quarter of 2017, Sharp mass-produced the first 70-inch 8K LCD TV screens to support the Sharp TV brand in China.
IHS believes that Samsung Electronics and Sony are the two major engines in the current 8K panel market. Both are planning to release flagship 8K TVs in 2018. Analysts believe that Samsung and Sony will digest almost all 120Hz 8K panels from Innolux, AU Optronics, and Samsung Display, which will be between 65 inches and 85 inches in size.
In addition, the IHS study pointed out that BOE and China National Panda planned to develop 8K LCD TV panels in the second half of 2018 and to adopt differentiated strategies.
The research also predicts that LG Display will focus on developing 8K OLED panels in the future. Just past CES 2018, LG Display showed the world's first 88-inch 8K OLED TV.
The HDMI Forum and HDMI Authorities may also be preparing for the 8K era through HDMI 2.1. HDMI 2.1 is a new connector and cable standard that supports resolutions up to 10K, 48Gbps data refresh rates, dynamic HDR, and other advanced features.
From the current stage of the plan, panel makers in the initial development stage will use amorphous silicon technology to build 60Hz 8K display, and those manufacturers in the next phase will use oxide technology to build 120Hz 8K display. IHS believes that the advantages of the latter technology are even more pronounced, with better opening ratios and lower energy consumption.
